Some Good Reasons for Building Green1. A low energy, sustainably built home reduces utility costs thereby reducing overall operating costs while providing improved indoor comfort levels.
2. People want homes that are healthy, safe, comfortable, and asthetically pleasing to live in. These are four highly marketable features.
3. These features can increase property values and at the same time lower the cost of ownership.
4. Environmentally friendly landscaping (drought resistant plants and trees that are native to our region) can have enormous benefits in reducing water usage and providing shading to reduce cooling costs.
5. Decisions made early in the site planning and building design process will prove to have the greatest impact on cost and performance.
6. "Think Holistic". Envision the home as a total system of components that work in harmony with each other.
7. Learn as much as you can about how products and systems interact. Try to stay ahead of the curve by building to Florida Green Building Coalition standards for residential construction.
8. Learn how to control your construction waste by using materials efficiently and recycling where practical.
9. Design for effective stormwater management around the site and if in a flood zone, allow for unrestricted movement of water through the building as well.
10. Become a responsible steward of the environment. It's good for Florida now and for future generations that will live here. It's also good for your business. For more information, visit: floridagreenbuilding.org
i-Level by Weyerhaeuser Weyerhaeuser Company has recently combined all of their wood-based building products under one trademark called I-Level. This includes the entire family of Trus-Joist Engineered Wood Products.
Kimal Lumber has been a Trus-Joist dealer for over 25 years. Kimal can point to numerous buildings where the application of Trus-Joist Engineered Wood Products has saved the builder both time and money, while giving the homeowner flat, squeak-free floors and strong, straight walls. As if that weren't enough, it is good to know some other things about engineered wood products-especially how they help the environment!
To preface, all U.S. owned forests comply with regulations as established by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and many Trus-Joist products are manufactured from Aspen and Yellow Poplar, since both tree species are plentiful and rapidly renewable.
Typically, sawmills can only acquire usable product from 50% or less of a given log. Trus-Joist found a way to meet this challenge by using up to 75% of the tree to make lumber that is superior to the original log, thus maximizing each logs potential.
The manufacturing process is highly efficient and utilizes steam injection which produces the 48 foot long billet of lumber before it's cut to various dimensions. Waste from this manufacturing process is used to fire the boilers that are needed for operation and the Ash from the boiler is sold to farms as a soil conditioner.
In addition, Weyerhaeuser continually evaluates their procedures in regard to their environmental impact. This evaluation includes efficient use of materials, reduction of solid waste and air pollutants and the safety and health of their employees.
