FAQ

●HOW DOES ONE OF YOUR VENTS PROVIDE SO MUCH COVERAGE?
You may have heard that FEMA requires that flood openings provide one square inch per one square foot of enclosed area, referring to dimensions of the opening in proportion to the space to be vented. This is only partially correct. FEMA’s regulations and guidelines do state that a non-engineered flood vent solution must (among other requirements) provide one square inch of opening per square foot of enclosed area to be vented. However; all Smart Vent products are certified engineered openings. They have been designed, engineered, tested, rated, and certified to provide flood relief so efficiently that only one unit is needed for 200 square feet of enclosed area. Please have us contact your code official, surveyor, or insurance agent if they require more information.

● ARE THE VENTS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN OTHER FLOOD SOLUTIONS?
Our vents are made from Type 316 (marine grade) stainless steel, and are manufactured and assembled entirely in the United States. This type of steel is extremely weather-durable: High nickel and molybdenum content provide excellent resistance to corrosion and pitting. It has higher strength than Type 304 [the most widely-used stainless steel]. Additionally (and perhaps more importantly), each of our vents is an engineered flood opening certified for 200 square feet of flood protection. It is physically impossible for a non-engineered opening of comparable dimensions to provide as much coverage within FEMA guidelines; most air vents, in fact, provide less than 20% of that (overlooking that they do not fulfill other requirements of the flood code). Where a house may require 30-35 air vents to provide enough flood protection, about 8 of our vents would provide more than necessary. Because fewer are needed, our vents are cost-competitive with anything else we have seen on the market.

●HOW DO THE MODELS DIFFER?
We have four primary models: The dual-function model (SmartVENT) is rated to provide 50 square inches of air ventilation opening in addition to 200 square feet of certified flood opening coverage. These vents are almost exclusively used in unconditioned crawlspaces, where air ventilation is required in addition to any flood protection. The insulated flood-only model (FloodVENT) is appropriate for most other applications. It provides only flood protection for garages, accessory structures, storage rooms, entry foyers, and conditioned crawlspaces, etc. Our third model is intended for installation in overhead (garage) doors. This model is, in function, identical to the flood-only model. It installs in a modified frame, and contains internal cams that prevent it from opening when the garage door is raised overhead. The fourth and newest model in our product family is our stud wall model. It is functionally identical to the flood-only model, except it is sized for easy retrofit installation in between wood studs built sixteen inch on center.

Beware of inexpensive non-compliant vents:
If you can’t pass a 3” sphere through an existing vent the vent is non-compliant, exposing the home to damaging flood water.
Smart Vent's patented float system allows the flood door to automatically rotate out of the path of flood water leaving an unobstructed path that relieves flood water pressure from the foundation wall.
